Dr. Emma (Ly) Montez, OD, FAAODr. Emma Montez is a California native who grew up in the East Bay. She completed her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and obtained her Master of Business Administration at Fitchburg State University. While at UC Berkeley, she had done work in visual neuroscience research at UC Berkeley's Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry. Dr. Montez earned her Doctorate of Optometry at the Southern California College of Optometry, and graduated at the top of her class with Magna Cum Laude.

In her training, Dr. Montez was given multiple Practice Excellence Awards in patient care. While in school, she was able to continue her research and made an impact on glaucoma testing protocols for early detection of the disease. She did her residency in Primary Eye Care/Ocular Disease at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and worked 3 years abroad to provide eye care for the US Naval Forces Japan. Since then, she has co-founded Specs Family Optometry and is very excited to provide the best vision care to Saratoga and the surrounding South Bay communities.
Dr. Montez is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society, the American Optometric Association, and the California Optometric Association. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves to travel internationally, to learn different cultures and explore diverse cuisines across the world.

Esther Chang, ABOCEsther was born in Taiwan and raised in Silicon Valley and is a local Lynbrook High School alumni. She attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), graduating Cum Laude with an AA in Merchandise Marketing and a bachelor’s in Business Management. Her interest in luxury retail, fashion, and business management lead her to spent over 10 years in management roles at tech startups and luxury retailers, opening stores, merchandising, and always striving to define what world class customer experiences means.

In 2018, Esther decided to take over her mother's (Mary) optical business and loved bridging the gap between healthcare, retail, and fashion to create elevated, boutique experiences for patients. Coming from a family three generations deep in optics and optometry, she found the support she needed to learn, had great mentors, and pass her ABO (American Board of Opticianry) exam on her first attempt. Since then, she's co-founded Specs Family Optometry with Dr. Montez and looks forward to connecting more with the community, creating engaging boutique experiences, and getting patients excited about ocular care and eyewear.
Aside from work, Esther is a new mom and has been enjoying this first year, watching baby Cas grow; you may also catch him with her some days at the office! She is also an avid sports fan, from F1 to the Warriors and Sharks. In her free time, she enjoys taking her dogs to explore scenic hikes, spending time with family and friends, and loves traveling and stamping her passport.

Mary Chang, ABOC, NCLEMary has over 30 years of optometry experience, spanning back to her time in Taiwan. She has been at Kaiser for the last 20 years and is a contact lens fitter, specializing in ocular disease and keratoconus. Mary is extremely passionate about the industry and enjoys giving lectures and talks at local churches to increase awareness around ocular health.
In her free time she enjoys gardening and loves to plant fruits and vegetables from Taiwan to share with family and friends. |
Fun facts: Mary is Esther's mom, and one of Esther's uncles was actually one of Mary's optometry professor during her Optometry school days in Taiwan, too!

Justine, Optician, Office CoordinatorJustine grew up in Daly City and is currently attending San Jose State University as a Biological Science major. She started wearing glasses at the age of 6 and has always been curious about the optical world. She wants to explore more about the industry and learn more about optics at Specs. She absolutely loves helping people look for glasses that they can comfortably and confidently wear.

Riley, Official GreeterRiley is one of Esther and her husband's rescue pups from Copper's Dream Rescue. She's been part of the Chang family since she was 8 weeks old and loves to greet patients at the door. She's been known to turn people who were scared of dogs, into Riley lovers by the time they leave!
She is a very active girl and enjoys walks, lots of walks, and lots of play time! She has the most unique curly fur coat and welcomes all the rubs she can get! If you're lucky, you might get a kiss or find her joining you in the exam room! |
